Give me the hard sell!

I'm currently a major addict of Laser Squad Nemesis and am looking to take over another strategy game :)

so what's so special about MA? and how long has it been going for?

Ahhh, I get to be the first responder! I'm sure there are many others that would have done so as well!

Massive Assault is the absolute paragon of what a strategy game should be. It is well balanced, it has a simple interface, it is quick to pick up and straightforward, but has a depth that surprises even the most seasoned veterans. Because of its elegent simplicity, it allows you to focus on pure strategy and tactics. And the situations that this game can give you to practice your tactics in various situations are endless.

When it comes to pure strategy, Massive Assault is unmatched. Because of its secret allies concept, every game is different, and the game strictly follows the principle of "what you see is what you get" (you know exactly how far your enemy's units can fire, move, and how much damage they will do). You will be drawn into this game as you learn to understand how to take in the board and decide how to come out on top. Will you choose a mobile assault force? Or will you choose a more cost effective but slower defensive line? Or will you just try to hold the enemy for more reinforcements? The decisions are endless, and your strategic mind will be challenged, and yet you will never be able to put down this game again.

as i understand LSN is a real-time game (with pause). If that is real-time aspect what you like - then probably MA is not a game for you because it's strictly turn-based.But if you played hexagonal-style TBS before especially stuff like Battle Isle of Panzer General you will probably like MA.

I'm a die hard RTS buff, and have played several RPGs with a real time/pause feature and I love MA :)

After reading abit about how LSN plays (i'm dling the trial now) the system is quite similar to MA with u taking ur turn then "emailing" it to ur oponent for them to take their turn when they want. But MA has it's own main server that games are automatically sent to and to which someone can log in (all done thru the game) and download all their turns at once (takes about 5seconds on a broadband modem).

As for the game itself maulstrom summed it up very well. I suggest you download and try the demo and decide for yourself what you think. It is a very good game if you have the patience to spend upto 30minutes on 1 turn, then wait usually a day before you get your opponents responce in. (Then shout in annouance as he saw something you missed and you just lost your advantage).

One game it's been compared to is chess, as the fact taht every unit hits for a set ammount of damage, with set max ranges and movement means you can see ahead of time what options an opponent and you have fairly similar to chess.

Anyway hope you try the demo and eventually buy the game. It is very good.

Well, I would like to make two comments to what Enforcer said:

a) on smaller planets in MA worlds war turns usually can be done faster than 30 minutes. I know many people making their turn during 5-8 minutes on Antarcticus planet.

b) In Massive Assault you can have dozens of battles running simultaneously, so when you complete one turn (even if it's against a New Zealander, who will wake up in 6 hours) you usually have many other unanswered turns - so you can select the amount of games confortable for your schedule and way of life.

not at all - 30m is often what I will spend on an LSN turn, and games can last for a day or even months.

whenever I see the words 'pure strategy' you've already got my attention ;)

I'll try and have a bash on the world war demo tonight - I live in Holland though so I guess I would have to order the game by post.

Any developers reading this - have you thought of allowing a kind of limited multi-player option for people who haven't bought the game?

We do this in LSN with the 'Field Instructors' system and it works very well for bringing new people in the game. I normally find all strategy game AIs boring and easy (unless they cheat terribly like in Civ III!) so it is really the multiplayer dimension that I am interested in, and it's tough to decide on whether to buy the game or not without experiencing this.

I really loved Battle Isle II - it was the first PC game I bought! And that's why MA appeals to me, although apart from the Secret Allies system it doesn't look much further advanced than BI II was... (in terms of gameplay I mean)

nice to see a man who still remember Battle Isle 2 :D i loved that game very much (though i consider BI3 Shadow of Emperor the best).IF you liked BI you will certainly like MA.MA is not so complicated in the means of units choise though.

Brilliant idea! Sounds like that should bring a bunch more players in! Get em hooked on Emerald MP and they won't be able to resist the game :)

Just buy the game already. You love Massive Assault. Massive Assault is good for you.

MA, in my opinion, is an excellent Strategy game.

Just buy the game already. You love Massive Assault. Massive Assault is good for you.

The graphics are awesome, the varied units give it lots of tactical possibilities.

Just buy the game already. You love Massive Assault. Massive Assault is good for you.

Hell, its good for the same reasons Chess is good. And Chess is good.

Just buy the game already. You love Massive Assault. Massive Assault is good for you.

And those are just ordinary little lines. I'm definitely not giving you subliminal messages.

Just buy the game already. You love Massive Assault. Massive Assault is good for you.

Definitely.
