Post subject: Very confused about MA and MAN
PostPosted: Thu Apr 08, 2004 12:58 pm
I am considering buying MA, but I am very confused about the exact differences between MA and MAN, and the future of MA. I have downloaded and played the MA demo, and I have downloaded, installed and played the MAN beta. Both games seems almost exactly alike, except for the muliplayer functions and chat in MAN. Since I cannot access the multiplayer functions in the MA demo, I would like to know some more informaion about the retail version of MA, as far as multiplayer is concerned. I have searched the forums for answers, but I have found alot of conflicting information.

1. Can I play MA on my LAN? (do I need 2 copies of the game?)
2. Can I connect directly to an opponent buy entering his IP address?
3. Is there an opponent finding system built into MA?
4. Once MAN is released, will I still be able to use the multiplayer portion of MA, and if so for how long?
5. Will MA continue to be supported after MAN is released? (patches, maps, etc), and if so for how long?
6. Can players with MA play against players with MAN?
7. What exactly are the differences between MAN and MA?

Thanks!

I can answer #1
You do need 2 copies of MA to play on a LAN. And technically, the two aren't even connecting to each other, but to the main server. If you don't have a connection to the net, 2 PCs cannot play each other. Since you are connecting to a main server, each would need its own ID/serial#.

No, you can't. Maybe someday, but right now you need to go online for it.

Why would you need to be able to do this?

Not counting the Opponents Wanted forum, there is one in MA and two in MAN.

Yes, forever.

The devs say that they will for quite a long time.

Yes.

MA currently has more singleplayer stuff (campaigns, scenarios, etc), but that may change with the retail release of MAN. MAN has more multiplayer stuff, such as a built-in chat room and an additional way to find opponents

Thanks alot for your fast reply.

I didn't know that MA used a "central server" for multiplayer games (something like Battlenet I assume?), thats why I asked about direct connections. Also if for some reason MA was no longer supported, or had no central server, it would be nice to be able to connect directly to other players.

Thanks again for your help!

please, do not worry - if even something very wrong happens and we will have to stop our online services, we definitely find solution (make LAN, public sourcecode of our game-server etc) which will allow to play MA forever 8)

Thats great news, thank you very much!

I've just bought the retail version of MA, and would hate to see it abandoned.
