Post subject:  Saving an online game

This post is in regards to allowing a player to work on an online turn, save his or her work, and then continue working on the turn at a later time.

I am not the first to post on this topic, and I have commented on it earlier. However, that was in a "desired features" thread. This post is only about "saving" online games.

First of all, such a feature would not write any kind of normal "save game" file to the client hard drive. Doing so creates the obvious problem of "cheating", a player being able to discover the locations of the opponent's secret armies.

However, a simple data file containing the "player actions" for the turn could be written to the hard drive.

Reading this file (when the player is ready to continue the game), the program would simply "play through" the actions in the file, just as if the player had entered them with the mouse (and possibly keyboard).

This "play through" process could be done "invisibly", so that the game appears to instantly restore to the point where the player saved it, or it could be done graphically so that the player sees his previously entered orders carried out.
