With the announcement of MAN 2, I don't know if there is a Glicko-type ranking system (or other ranking system) already in the works to cover all planets and overall rank spanning MA, MAN, and Domination. This would be really nice. Of course, assuming full compatibility, it should retain all previous MA, MAN, and Domination battle results as well as include new planets.

Also, I have a few small ideas concerning how to improve on the existing ranking system:

(1) Indicate whether each game is a regular, clan, or tournament game

(2) if regular game, then:

(A) indicate if it was a public challenge, along with who issued/accepted
(B) indicate if it was a personal challenge, along with who issued/accepted

This would all just be interesting additional information to consider.

Could be interesting also to know the turns and if it was a time out.

A lot of this is already recorded on the Massive Assault Network site. They have whether it was a clan/tournament game and which tournament it belonged to, and how the game ended (including if it was a timeout).

Right now as they are, time outs are definately different then wins, as the time out system is very strict and inflexible. But if they use a chess clock style system, timeouts will be the same as a win (especially if they are automatic). You will know exactly how much time you have left for the entire game, so its much less sucseptible to problems in completing games.

True, a lot of this info is already on the MAN ratings site. But it would be nice to have everything consolidated into one "master" Glicko-type rating for all 24 maps. (The MAN ratings site doesn't even have Trinity at the moment, and the Glicko system is arguably a better ranking system.)

One issue that might come up is that if MAN 2 has the new turn sequence and new units used even on the old MA and MAN maps, then it will matter whether battles were fought "old style" or MAN 2 style. Both of these factors combined can dramatically change how a map plays and how much of an advantage PL has. So perhaps a master ranking system could at least indicate this as well.

I agree that all the data should be collated somehow. I also think that Tournament games should be treated seperately somehow, as those generally are done in a way that rewards players with the best skill.

Using both the Glicko and the tournament results, you can get some pretty accurate results I think. For the clan war we used the glicko as a base, but then modified it by tournament performace (IE if someone consistatly beats high-ranked glicko rated players their finalized ranking would be higher).

There were a couple drawbacks of the Glicko system... it only really works if you have a lot of data to start with, and MA doesn't really have the style to give you a lot of data. There are only a few players that have played over a couple hundred games, and those divided between the vastly different situations found in the many maps, and also divided on whether they played PL or FNU.

The clan war system was the best of both worlds, IMO... it took the Glicko system, which in itself is pretty accurate, then modified it using games that really matter, where people put forth the most effort and are most fairly set apart. This reduces some of the problems of the Glicko results for those that have been active in the tournaments.
